Freund's Germany through with Austria

Germany made a perfect start to their bid to regain the UEFA European Under-17 Championship title as they and Austria moved forward from qualifying round Group 2 in Estonia.

Champions in 2009 but unable to reach the finals last year, Germany defeated the hosts 5-0, Bosnia and Herzegovina 6-1 and Austria 2-1 to top the group. Austria's 3-0 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina and 1-1 tie with the hosts proved enough for second place and they join Germany in the 30 November elite round draw.

Levent Ayçiçek and Fabian Schnellhardt each struck twice in Germany's opener against Estonia, the last three goals coming in the final six minutes, while Austria struggled for nearly an hour to break down Bosnia and Herzegovina before Christian Derflinger broke the deadlock and substitutes Stefan Savić and Nikola Dovedan added late strikes.

Two days later Samed Yeşil got a hat-trick for Germany in their defeat of Bosnia and Herzegovina, having been held to 1-1 before three goals between the 26th and 34th minute; in the other game Marten Saarlas's sixth-minute penalty put Estonia ahead before an immediate equaliser by Kevin Friesenbichler, who missed a spot kick later in the half and Austria were more than matched in the second half.

Bosnia and Herzegovina secured the consolation of third place with a 4-1 win against Estonia meaning Austria were able to afford their loss to Germany. Cimo Röcker set up two first-half goals for Yeşil and although Dominik Wydra pulled one back on 46 minutes, Austria could not find an equaliser.

"We came here to win the group with nine points so we accomplished our mission," Germany coach Steffen Freund told UEFA.com. "Austria had many chances today, but we deserved the win because we played in a fantastic style in the last two matches. It is hard in football to score five in a third match."

His Austria counterpart coach Thomas Janeschitz said: "We are happy with second place. It was our target to book an elite round berth and we did it. We faced some problems in the match against Estonia. We had eight or ten beautiful chances to score but we didn't. We are unhappy to be defeated [today]. The problems are the same – we didn't convert our chances into goals, Germany did. We will take some lessons and fight to get to the final tournament."
