Germany book their ticket for Under-17 finals

Germany have become the first side to earn their place at the UEFA European Under-17 Championship finals in Slovenia after a 0-0 against Portugal gave them top spot in elite round Group 4.

Going into Sunday's decisive game at Bremen's Sportplatz Vinnenweg, last season's runners-up were two points clear of Portugal. With neither team able to find the net, that is how the situation remained at the top of the table, with Stefan Böger's side going into the 4 April draw for the finals, which run from 4 to 16 May.

"I am very satisfied with the result of this tournament," the Germany coach told UEFA.com. "We are through and that is most important. Results are the important thing in such tournaments and we have achieved what we set as our target." In the group's other game, Bulgaria beat point-less Turkey 2-0 to wrap up third spot.

On the first day, Germany had raced out of the blocks with a 4-0 defeat of Turkey, Max Meyer's 20th-minute opener followed by a Rahman Buğra Çağıran own goal before Said Benkarit and substitute Felix Lohkemper struck late on. Portugal were held 0-0 by Bulgaria.

Two days later, Meyer scored twice as Germany overcame Bulgaria 2-1, but their hopes of qualifying early were dashed by Portugal's 3-0 win against Turkey. Tomás's 15th-minute effort was added to by an Ivo Rodrigues penalty and a second-half André Silva goal as Portugal triumphed.
