In the meeting of the FIFA U-17 World Cup and UEFA European Under-17 Championship holders, it was the global titlewinners who emerged triumphant to throw elite round Group 6 wide open.
Hosts Switzerland lost to Serbia on Thursday while Germany were busy beating Hungary, but it was a different story today as Andelko Savic scored within four minutes of his introduction as substitute. Switzerland and Germany are now both within a point of Serbia at the top with one game to go.
Stjepan Vuleta shot just wide for Switzerland in the sixth minute and the home side restricted Germany to very few first-half chances. Heinz Moser's charges then went close to going ahead shortly after the restart when a Valuta shot was spilt by Timo Horn, but Mike Kleiber, a 14th-minute substitute for Darko Jevtic, could not turn in the rebound.
The deadlock was nonetheless broken four minutes after Savic was sent into the fray, the newcomer turning in an Alessandro Martinelli pass to clinch victory. Switzerland will qualify if they beat Hungary on Tuesday and Serbia do not defeat Germany. The holders must defeat Serbia and hope Switzerland do not win.
