Youth priority
In his welcome message for the tournament, Mr Platini said it offered an ideal opportunity to observe the stars of tomorrow in their formative stages. "The development of youth football in Europe has always been regarded as a vital sector of the game and one of the main priorities for UEFA," he said ahead of the event, involving the hosts, the Netherlands, Serbia, Scotland, holders Spain, Switzerland, the Republic of Ireland and France.

'Invaluable experience'
"Participation in these youth tournaments provides invaluable international experience for today's talents, and thereby helps to develop the heroes of tomorrow, thus safeguarding the game's future good health. Besides, by awarding a Fair Play trophy, UEFA encourages young footballers to behave like true sportsmen from the very beginning of their careers.

'Exciting matches'
"In addition to hosts Turkey, who qualified automatically, I take this opportunity to congratulate the seven other teams who qualified for this final round through a very tight qualifying phase. The list of participating teams inspires confidence and promises exciting matches, with Scotland and the Republic of Ireland making their first appearances in an Under-17 final tournament. The presence of major countries together with new nations proves that, right across the continent, our football associations are nurturing young talent.

Thanks to the hosts
"I wish all the participants every success and I would like to end by extending my sincere thanks to the Turkish Football Association and its president, Hasan Doğan, as well as to the region of Antalya and all the host venues for their hard work and commitment in staging what is certain to be a highly successful tournament." Matches kick-off at 15.00 CET, with two games shown live on Eurosport on each matchday leading to the final on 16 May at the brand-new Mardan Sport Complex.
