Norway and Austria pip Poland

Norway edged Poland out of qualification for the Elite round to join group winners Austria in the next stage of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship.

Norway edged Poland out of qualification for the Elite round to join qualifying round Group 2 winners Austria in the next stage of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship.

Poland comeback
Austria made a good start to the mini-tournament as they defeated Norway 4-2 in Niechorze. Andreas Tiffner put them ahead on ten minutes and although Lars Gunnar Johnsen levelled before half-time, Daniel Schütz scored seconds after the break and Andreas Weimann and Rema Mally extended Austria's advantage before substitute Ulrik Balstad's late consolation. In Trzebiatow, Bunjamin Shabani put F.Y.R. Macedonia 1-0 up against the hosts on 13 minutes but Sebastian Czajkowski equalised just past the half-hour and in the last 30 minutes Damian Łazicki gave Poland the lead before substitute Rafał Duchnowski scored twice for a 4-1 victory.

Macedonian success
Two days later Norway and Poland played out a 0-0 draw in Niechorze, and the group was thrown wide open later that afternoon as F.Y.R. Macedonia defeated Austria 3-2. Muhammed Ildiz had put Austria in front on 22 minutes but in first-half added time Shabani levelled. Gjorgi Markov put F.Y.R. Macedonia into a 46th-minute lead and Shababi struck again before substitute Martin Ivos set up a nervous last five minutes but Austria could not claw back a point.

Polish disappointment
Austria went in to the final fixture in second place behind Matchday 3 opponents Poland, but this was soon to change as the nations swapped places following Austria's 1-0 victory. That result allowed Norway to leapfrog Poland and into the final qualification spot after they defeated F.Y.R Macedonia 4-0.
