Germany and England set up a FIFA U-17 World Cup quarter-final after each emerged triumphant in the Round of 16 in Korea Republic today.
Germany prevail
In Cheonan, Germany were given a tough test by the United States but made the breakthrough on 65 minutes when Richard Sukuta-Pasu ran on to a long ball and lifted the ball above goalkeeper Josh Lambo and in. Sukuta-Pasu struck again with five minutes to go, slipping his shot past Lambo after a Toni Kroos through-ball, and although Mykell Bates pulled one back in an added-time goalmouth scramble, Germany prevailed 2-1.
England joy
An all-European encounter in Goyang City on Sunday was confirmed as England simultaneously beat Syria 3-1 in Jeju. England manager John Peacock selected an unfamiliar 4-4-2 formation without injured playmaker Victor Moses, and his team led in the 17th minute when Henri Lansbury followed up his penalty in the 2-1 group stage defeat of Brazil with a similarly cool spot-kick after a Syrian handball. Krystian Pearce doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time with some deft footwork and although Ziad Ajouz pulled one back early in the second period, Rhys Murphy turned in a cross from Arsenal FC club-mate Lansbury just past the hour mark to clinch victory against the fellow tournament debutants.
Spain face France
Earlier, Argentina beat Costa Rica 2-0 to earn a Sunday quarter-final with African champions Nigeria, who came from behind to defeat Colombia 2-1. The last eight starts on Saturday with European champions Spain taking on France in Jeju hoping to repeat their 2-0 win when they met on Matchday 1 of the Belgian-hosted continental competition in May. Ghana, fresh from eliminating Brazil, play Peru.
