Turkey thankful to Caner

France 0-1 Turkey Caner Ergin gets the Group 6 hosts off to a perfect start against the holders.

Turkey made a winning start to their UEFA European Under-17 Championship Elite round campaign with a narrow win against holders France.

Caner winner
The Group 6 mini-tournament hosts secured three points at the Söke City stadium thanks to a goal from striker Caner Ergin – who, at the age of 16, has already played for Vestel Manisaspor’s first team – two minutes into the second half.

French chances
France had their chances to snatch a draw, missing a late penalty and provoking a frantic goalmouth scramble in the closing stages when the ball was hacked off the Turkish goalline three times, with goalscorer Caner provinding the final clearance. Turkey next play Scotland in Kusadasi on Thursday, when France face Azerbaijan.
