Denmark were on the back foot from the start, but both teams hit the post in the first half. Striker Oleksandr Gladkyy proved the key in the second period, opening the scoring with a lob on 64 minutes and then doubling the lead a minute from time.
'Close match'
Danish coach Hans Brun Larsen, who was without leading scorer Lasse Qvist through injury, said after the game: "I am very satisfied with the performance today, we had three or four good chances. It is good for players to understand that at the top level you cannot afford to make mistakes. Ukraine are a strong team and we knew it would be a close match."
Germany for Ukraine
His team now meet Slovakia, who lost 2-1 to Germany today, with the group hosts forming Ukraine's next opposition. Both games are on Saturday.
