Moldova finish runners-up
Moldova also advanced to the next qualifying stage as runners-up while Kazakhstan's youngsters finished third on their European debut and hosts Estonia were left bottom of the pile with no points.
Technical and physical superiority
The Ukrainians, with 15 of their 18 players hailing from FC Dynamo Kyiv, were superior both technically and physically to the other countries. They won their opener against Estonia 2-0 and then mauled Kazakhstan 6-1. Moldova were brushed aside 3-1 in the final game.
Variety of options
Viktor Kaschey's side always seemed to have a variety of options in attack with forward Olexandr Gladkiy, midfield player Oleg Moroz and striker Olexandr Yakovenko all particularly impressive. Indeed, eight different Ukrainian players got on the scoresheet over the course of the mini-tournament.
Brightest prospect
One of the brightest prospects from the other three teams was Kazakhstan striker Tugan Khamkhoyev. The speedy and skilful striker caused problems throughout for the opposing defenders and netted in every game to finish as the group's top scorer with four goals.
Kazakh recovery
However it was the talented Moldovans who secured second place. They edged out the Kazakhs 4-3 on the opening day and then beat Estonia 2-0. After suffering at the hands of Ukraine, Kazakhstan recovered well to beat Estonia 2-1 in their final game, however they did not do enough overall to overtake Croatia in the race for the extra second-round place on offer to the best third-placed side from round one.
