Article body
Ross Mathie's Scotland side cruised through the UEFA European Under-17 Championship Group 3 mini-tournament in Hungary with the minimum of fuss - winning all three of their matches with forward Steve Fletcher hitting five goals.
Wait and see
Norway edged out the Hungarians for second place in the pool and the other automatic slot in the next round - leaving the Hungarians to wait and see if they will progress as the best third-placed side from the 12 first-round groups. Of the five groups already completed they currently have the best record of any third-placed country - and have thereby eliminated the previous best-ranked third-placed country, Croatia, from second round contention.
Fletcher on fire
Scotland opened their campaign as they meant to go on - two goals from Fletcher securing a 2-0 victory against Norway. On the same day, Hungary waltzed past San Marino 4-0.
Sammarinese thrashed
Next up, the Scots thrashed the Sammarinese 9-0, Fletcher netting twice again while five other players also got on the scoresheet. Meanwhile Norway and Hungary drew 2-2 in a dramatic encounter. The Norwegians led 2-0 after 41 minutes courtesy of a double by Bjarne Ingebretsen. However the home side hit back to take a point thanks to goals from Bartha and Máthé.
Final games
In the final round of games, Flecher hit his fifth goal in three games to maintain Scotland's 100 per cent record as they beat the Hungarians 1-0 while Norway put eight past San Marino, with defender Jesper Aleksander Mathisen netting a hat-trick, to edge out Hungary for second place on goal difference.
