Portugal secure maximum points

Hungary 0-2 Portugal Portugal ended their Group A campaign with a maximum nine points.

Good value
The host nation were good value for their third victory in as many games, enjoying 61 per cent of the possession and creating several good chances. With top spot in the group and a place in the semis guaranteed before kick-off Violante gave a chance to several players who had not appeared in starting lineup so far in the tournament. Indeed only Saleiro kept his place in a reshuffled midfield and attack.

Attacking from the start
Portugal attacked from the outset, going close to taking the lead after just three minutes when FC Porto forward Hélder Barbosa intercepted a Hungarian pass and crossed low from the left to SC Braga midfield player Bruno Gama, whose shot was blocked.

Early onslaught
In the first four minutes alone the Portuguese won four corner kicks. However despite the early onslaught Hungary managed to keep the first half goalless, with GK making a spectacular save three minutes before the interval when he tipped Hélder Barbosa's header from a Bruno Gama cross over the bar.

Bruno Gama goal
Hungary made a positive start to the second half with defender Gábor Kováks shooting just wide from the right-hand corner of the penalty area. However, it was Portugal who broke the deadlock in the 50th minute when defender João Dias crossed from the right flank and a Hungarian defender headed the ball into the path of Bruno Gama and his shot from just outside the box flew into the corner of the net.

Adelino Freitas doubles advantage
On the hour a wonderful 40-metre pass by defender Miguel Veloso picked out substitute Adelino Freitas with just the Hungarian goalkeeper to beat but his lob went just over the crossbar. Two minutes later, though, Adelino Freitas made no mistake, gathering possession in midfield before dashing into the penalty box and placing the ball low into the left-hand corner of the net to wrap up a highly satisfactory day’s work for the hosts.
