Nuri winner
Abdullah Avci's side had the better of the play in Lima, but it seemed their best chance had gone when Tefvik Köse headed wide. However, with six minutes left, BV Borussia Dortmund midfield player Nuri Sahin turned and shot past Australian goalkeeper Alex Vrteski. Avci said: "We were superior to Australia principally because we never stopped going forward."
Mexico triumph
In the other Group B opener, Mexico defeated Uruguay 2-0. Turkey play Uruguay on Monday, when Mexico take on Australia. Meanwhile, the two Group A games on Friday between hosts Peru and Ghana, and China and Costa Rica, both finished 1-1.

Europe's other two contenders in Peru, the Netherlands and Italy, start their bids on Saturday. The Dutch play Qatar in Group D in Piura, where holders Brazil then meet Gambia, and Italy begin their Group C campaign in Chiclayo against Ivory Coast before the Democratic People's Republic of Korea take on the United States.
