Article body
Czech Republic and Belgium have become the final sides to book their places in the second qualifying round of the 2002/03 UEFA European Under-17 Championship.
Czechs top group
The two sides dominated the Group 4 mini-tournament in Cyprus, fighting out a 1-1 draw in the final game to finish level on seven points, with the Czechs topping the group on goal difference.
Vorisek double
The Czechs began their campaign with a 3-1 win against the Cypriot hosts. Ondrej Vorisek giving them a ninth-minute lead which Michalis Dimitriou soon cancelled out. However the Czechs regained the lead on 42 minutes through Vorisek's second goal of the match and added a third on 72 minutes when Michal Parys struck.
Vanderhaeghe hat-trick
Meanwhile, Belgium began their campaign with a 6-2 win against Estonia. Despite the wide scoreline, Belgium did not have things all their own way as they had to fight from 2-1 behind to win, with Kjelle Vanderhaeghe hitting a hat-trick.
Vorisek double
Belgium won their next match against Cyprus 2-0 with second-half goals from Damien Galluci and Jason Vandelannoite. Meanwhile, the Czechs saw off Estonia 6-0, Vorisek scoring another double with four other players also getting on the scoresheet.
Cyprus finish third
Hosts Cyprus finished third after beating Estonia 4-0, with all the goals, including a Dimitriou hat-trick, coming in the second half. Both the Belgians and the Czechs were already assured of qualification going into the final game but there was still top spot to play for.
Second-round groups
Pavel Malchárek gave the Czechs a first-half lead but Belgium equalised through Onur Kaya on 64 minutes. The resultant draw saw the Czech Republic top the section and advance into second qualifying Group 6 alongside England, Slovakia and Scotland. Meanwhile Belgium will face Germany, Italy and Azerbaijan in Group 7. In each case only the side that finishes top will reach next summer's finals in Portugal.
