Real Madrid will play Sevilla in the third consecutive all-Spanish UEFA Super Cup after their respective trophy successes this month earned them a place in Trondheim, Norway, on 9 August.
On 18 May, Sevilla's victory over Liverpool in Basel secured their fifth appearance in the showpiece event – each one as UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League title holders. Then, ten days later, Real Madrid saw off Atlético Madrid on penalties to win the UEFA Champions League, and will now hope to repeat their 2-0 victory against Sevilla in the 2014 UEFA Super Cup in Cardiff.
For both teams it is a fifth tilt at the UEFA Super Cup title, all of Madrid's coming as UEFA Champions League winners. Sevilla will make it three appearances in a row, having lost 5-4 in extra time to Barcelona in front of a 51,940, tournament-record crowd in Tbilisi 12 months ago. The Andalusians beat Barcelona in 2006 before losing to AC Milan a year later.
Madrid were beaten on their 1998 debut, 1-0 by UEFA Cup Winners' Cup victors Chelsea in Monaco, and two seasons later went down 2-1 in extra time to Galatasaray, the first side to have qualified by lifting the UEFA Cup. However, the Merengues did see off Feyenoord 3-1 in 2002 on their third Monaco outing before their Cardiff success against Sevilla two years ago.
Whatever happens on 9 August, Spain will extend their lead as the most-titled UEFA Super Cup nation. They already have the most wins – 12 – and the largest number of appearances – 22; which statistics are guaranteed to increase to 13 and 24 respectively.
In the 16 editions of the competition since the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League winners began to participate, the overall outcome has been 9-7 in favour of the UEFA Champions League holders following Barcelona's 2015 victory over Sevilla. That means the UEFA Champions League holders have won all three matches since the switch from Monaco; Madrid making it a fourth straight victory would be a new record.
- The venue: Lerkendal Stadion, Trondheim
• The game will be the first European club final played in Norway, with Trondheim following in the footsteps of Prague (2013), Cardiff (2014) and Tbilisi (2015), the previous cities to be awarded the UEFA Super Cup since the move from its permanent home of Monaco.
• The ground was opened in 1947, initially as the home of SK Freidig and FK Kvid, with Rosenborg taking up residence ten years later.
• Originally a multi-purpose arena also used for athletics, the stadium's track was removed when three new stands were built between 2000 and 2002.
• A regular UEFA Champions League venue during Rosenborg's many campaigns, the 21,600-capacity ground has also staged several Norway internationals.
• The stadium was proposed as a venue for the opening and closing ceremonies during Trondheim's 2018 Winter Olympic bid.
• The 2017 UEFA Super Cup will be held at National Arena Filip II of Macedonia in Skopje.
