FC Barcelona will take on Sevilla FC in the second straight all-Spanish UEFA Super Cup at the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena in Tbilisi on Tuesday 11 August.
After 15 editions of the fixture at AS Monaco FC's Stade Louis II between 1998 and 2012, the venue for the annual meeting of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League winners now changes every year. Following on from Prague's Stadion Eden and the Cardiff City Stadium, Georgia are now set to hold their first UEFA football showpiece after previously hosting the 2013 UEFA Futsal Cup finals (in which FC Barcelona were beaten semi-finalists).
Thanks to their UEFA Champions League final win against Juventus in Berlin, Barcelona will increase their record number of UEFA Super Cup appearances to nine. Victory would allow them to equal AC Milan, the only current five-time winners, Barcelona having prevailed in 1992, 1997, 2009 and 2011 but having also lost in 1979, 1982, 1989 and 2006 – when they fell 3-0 to Sevilla in the only all-Spanish affair before last year (also the Blaugrana's sole defeat when going into the fixture as European Cup holders).
Sevilla are in contention as UEFA Europa League winners for the second season running following their Warsaw success against FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. In Cardiff last year, they went down 2-0 to Real Madrid CF in what was their third appearance in the match. The Andalusians saw off Barcelona 3-0 in 2006 but 12 months later succumbed 3-1 to Milan in an occasion overshadowed by the death of Sevilla player Antonio Puerta three days earlier.
Whatever happens on 11 August, Spain will extend their lead as the most titled UEFA Super Cup nation. They already have the most victories – 11 – and the largest number of appearances – 20 – statistics guaranteed to increase to 12 and 22 respectively. In the 15 games since the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League winners began to participate, the score has been 8-7 to the UEFA Champions League holders thanks to Madrid's 2014 triumph against Sevilla.
