José Antonio Reyes felt Club Atlético de Madrid were deserving winners of the UEFA Super Cup and is hopeful their 2-0 defeat of FC Internazionale Milano can provide the spur for further improvement this season.
Having already brought the best out of Inter No1 Júlio César with a stinging short on the hour, Reyes broke the deadlock within minutes in Monaco courtesy of a shot low beyond the Brazilian international after he had outfoxed Maicon. "It was a tremendous joy scoring in the final – every player dreams of that," said the 26-year-old.
Sergio Agüero made the game safe in the 83rd minute when turning in Simão's squared ball, yet it was Reyes who shone brightest as Los Colchoneros added the Super Cup to their success in the inaugural UEFA Europa League final in May.
"I think it was a great night, we played really well and can now go and celebrate," said the winger. "We were totally focused, played extremely well as a team and did what we needed to. It wasn't tough – we played as best we could. Indeed, we made things tough for Inter and I think we played a good match."
Named as the official man of the match, Reyes spoke with enthusiasm about the influence of coach Quique Sánchez Flores, a man who is seemingly getting the best out of a player touted for greatness after bursting onto the scene at Sevilla FC nine years ago.
"I've trained well and have tremendous confidence in my coach, and on the pitch I'm playing well and I love playing," said Reyes. "But this was about the team and we played very well tonight – something we want to do in all our matches this season." Real Sporting de Gijón, Atlético's opening opponents in the new Liga campaign on Monday, have been warned.
