Article body
Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard suffered a calf injury during his side's Premiership victory against Sunderland AFC on Saturday but the club's medical staff are hopeful he will make a full recovery in time for Friday night's UEFA Super Cup in Monaco.
Missing in midweek
The England midfield player was substituted ten minutes into the second half of Liverpool's win at Anfield, a 1-0 triumph secured by Xabi Alonso's free-kick, and has been ruled out of the holders' UEFA Champions League third qualifying round second-leg encounter with PFC CSKA Sofia on Tuesday evening.
Scan results
Gerrard, 25, had a scan this morning which revealed a strain on his right calf and an Anfield source said: "Steven will definitely miss Tuesday's game. Regarding his involvement in the Super Cup, we will have a better idea later in the week."
Olic out
Liverpool's opponents on Friday, UEFA Cup holders PFC CSKA Moskva, are not without injury problems of their own after striker Ivica Olic's knee-ligament injury in midweek. The Croatian spent the first weekend of a six-month lay-off on the sidelines as his team-mates warmed up for the trip to Monte Carlo with a 1-1 draw at home against FC Zenit St. Peterburg on Sunday.
Love unfit
Young winger Yuri Zhirkov took his place in the starting lineup for CSKA after recovering from injury but Brazilian striker Vágner Love was not fully fit and began the game on the bench, emerging only for the last 15 minutes of an entertaining encounter.
Spoils shared
Martin Skrtel had put the visitors ahead on 58 minutes but Zlatko Kranjcar's side won a penalty three minutes later and Sergei Ignashevich made no mistake from the spot. It was the club's third succesive scoring draw in the Russian Premier League and took them on to 37 points, seven behind leaders FC Lokomotiv Moskva.
