FC Porto may be looking to improve on a modest UEFA Super Cup record when they take on FC Barcelona on Friday, but the Dragons have nevertheless enjoyed more success on the European stage than any other Portuguese club.
Making their fourth appearance in the annual showpiece, Porto have so far only one win to their name – in 1987. That triumph followed European Champions Clubs' Cup glory against FC Bayern München in Vienna – the club's maiden piece of European silverware. It was the start of an impressive, and ever-expanding, collection as club president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa recalls.
"I think it was very important, because Porto were starting to impose themselves at national level," he told UEFA.com. "Internationally – and I remember it because I have followed Porto since I was a child – whenever we even got through the qualification round of the UEFA Cup, or before that, the Fairs Cup, it was a party. At that moment we already knew that it would end. I felt then we wouldn't stop, that we would get more victories, which we fortunately have."
