A UEFA Super Cup record 30,854 crowd were present at the Cardiff City Stadium as Ronaldo, who had set a UEFA Champions League scoring record in 2013/14, picked up where he had left off. It was Madrid's second UEFA Super Cup, like in the UEFA Champions League ending a 12-year wait.
New signings James Rodríguez and Toni Kroos started for Madrid and the Colombian combined with Bale and Ronaldo to set up the opener. Ronaldo added another after good work by Karim Benzema to end the hopes of the UEFA Europa League holders.
Sergio Ramos said: "It's an important day for Madrid – adding another trophy after so many years without winning it is always positive for morale. We're proud of the season we had last year and now we have to defend our European title, which was a trophy we put so much into winning. This is a new target for us."
Sevilla's Denis Suárez added: "We were able to compete with Madrid, who are one of the best teams in the world and who won the Champions League. After their goal we had a very clear chance which Iker [Casillas] saved and if we'd managed to score there the game would have changed."
