Expert prediction

Ondřej Zlámal, match reporter: Jaroslav Šilhavý renewed his contract in May and leads a Czech side relying on a backbone of West Ham duo Tomáš Souček and Vladimír Coufal and the experienced Tomáš Vaclík into their first League A campaign. Top scorer Patrik Schick is out, though, and Hradec Králové's Adam Vlkanova is in line for his first cap. Switzerland, Nations League finalists in 2019, lost to the Czechs at UEFA EURO 2008 but they are much stronger these days.

What the coaches say

Highlights: Switzerland 4-0 Bulgaria

Jaroslav Šilhavý, Czech Republic coach: "There is nothing easy about what lies ahead, and our other opponents in the group [Portugal and Spain] are very difficult, so the games against the Swiss are very important. This is a Champions League for national teams; you could call it a mini-EURO. It's a pity some of our best players are unavailable, but everyone will do their best."

Murat Yakin, Switzerland coach: "Are we looking for revenge for the 1-0 loss to the Czechs in the opening game of UEFA EURO 2008? There are feelings attached to every opponent, but in sport, [revenge] isn't a thing. The important thing is to look ahead. To play good football focused on results. To finish near the top of this group, and above all, get a rhythm going for our big goal: the World Cup."
