What do you need to know?

In four meetings in the UEFA Champions League group stage, Juventus have had more or less the better of Sevilla: W2 D1 L1 F5 A2. The Spanish side have not scored in either of their previous games in Turin, but Juve have lost their last two home games against Liga clubs: 2-0 against Barcelona in 2020 and 3-0 to Villarreal in March last year.

Juve's European pedigree is impressive; two-time European champions, they also won three editions of the UEFA Cup, but have been without a major European trophy since their UEFA Champions League success in 1995/96. Since then, Sevilla have won an unprecedented six editions of this competition, most recently in 2019/20. After a season in which they flirted with relegation at one point, Sevilla are seemingly back on song, their elimination of Man United in the last round a reminder Thursdays have been their favourite footballing nights for some time.

A crucial win away at Atalanta, promising winger Samuel Iling-Junior on the scoresheet on his Serie A debut and Dušan Vlahović scoring a goal (and what a goal!) for the second game in a row; Juventus have strong momentum going into the semi-final first leg. Not always eye catching, but solid and effective, the team moulded by Massimiliano Allegri know how to suffer when needed and strike at the right moment. Will it be enough to get the better of the UEFA Europa League specialists? The Old Lady will try 'until the end', as their motto goes, with the support of a rising Paul Pogba, who has finally shown glimpses of his class in recent weeks.

Sevilla removed any lingering relegation fears with a late victory over Espanyol last Thursday and now they can focus entirely on ‘their’ competition – and a return to the scene of their 2014 final triumph over Benfica. The six-time winners have never lost a UEFA Cup/Europa League semi-final, and if Juventus start as favourites, the same was said of Manchester United in the last round. In Youssef En-Nesyri, Sevilla have a striker recently named La Liga player of the month for April, though the absence of Tanguy Nianzou will likely mean Nemanja Gudelj filling in at the back once more.

Massimiliano Allegri, Juventus coach: "Sevilla have won the Europa League four times and the UEFA Cup twice. They are used to this type of situation, they are experts. It will take a big effort to beat them. We need to do what we've always talked about: give everything on the pitch and see where that takes us at the end of the season."

José Luis Mendilibar, Sevilla coach: "We've arrived here feeling good and it's going to be a very equal semi-final. The club are used to these kind of big games. Keeping calm is going to be key. We are going to have to compete against a very good team. Juventus are very good at taking their chances, and it's a risk we know all about."

Where is the 2023 Europa League final?

The second leg takes place in Seville on 18 May, with the winners advancing to the 2023 Europa League final against Roma or Leverkusen. Juventus or Sevilla will be the nominal home team for the final, which takes place at Budapest's Puskás Aréna (pictured) on Wednesday 31 May.
