The quarter-finals of the 2022/23 UEFA Europa League bring together Feyenoord and Roma in a repeat of last season's inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League final, which the Italian side won 1-0 in Tirana.

During the autumn Feyenoord claimed top spot in UEFA Europa League Group F, where all four teams registered eight points, the Dutch side edging out Roma's city rivals Lazio and Sturm Graz on goal difference and runners-up Midtjylland on goals scored. Arne Slot's side then overwhelmed Shakhtar Donetsk 8-2 on aggregate in the round of 16, their 7-1 second-leg victory in Rotterdam equalling the biggest win ever recorded in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final.

Roma avoided a return to the UEFA Europa Conference League by finishing as runners-up in UEFA Europa League Group C to Real Betis. José Mourinho's team then came from behind to beat Salzburg in the knockout play-offs (0-1 a, 2-0 h), thereby prolonging the club's run of European last-16 participations to a ninth successive season, before reaching the quarter-finals at the expense of Real Sociedad, a 2-0 win in Rome preceding a goalless second leg in San Sebastián.

Previous meetings

Last year's UEFA Europa Conference League final in Tirana was won by Mourinho's Roma at the expense of Slot's Feyenoord thanks to a 32nd-minute goal from Nicolò Zaniolo, giving the Italian club their first UEFA club competition triumph.

There had been just one prior UEFA contest between the clubs, Roma also winning that tie, 3-2 on aggregate in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League round of 32 when they followed up a 1-1 first-leg draw at the Stadio Olimpico with an incident-packed 2-1 victory in Rotterdam in which three players – one from Fred Rutten's Feyenoord, two from Rudi Garcia's Roma – were sent off. That remains Feyenoord's only defeat at home to Serie A visitors.

Feyenoord have now faced Italian opposition in 17 UEFA encounters with the record W6 D4 L7. All but one of those defeats have been outside the Netherlands, where their record against Italian visitors is W4 D3 L1, the most recent fixture a 1-0 win against Lazio on Matchday 6, courtesy of Santiago Giménez's 64th-minute strike, that enabled the Dutch side to top their group.

Although they have lost both previous UEFA ties against Roma, Feyenoord have won their other two knockout contests against Italian opposition, the most recent in the semi-final of the club's 2001/02 UEFA Cup triumph against Inter Milan (1-0 a, 2-2 h).

Roma's record in UEFA competition against Dutch clubs is W5 D4 L2. Including last season's final, they have won all five of their previous knockout ties against opponents from the Netherlands and are unbeaten in their last eight games against Eredivisie sides, drawing all four at home and winning all four outside Italy.

Form guide

Feyenoord

Feyenoord finished third in last season's Eredivisie, 12 points adrift of champions Ajax, and also played 19 matches in the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League. Slot's side progressed all the way from the second qualifying round to the final, which they lost to Roma after eliminating Partizan, Slavia Praha and Marseille with an unbeaten run in the knockout rounds.

UEFA Cup winners in 1974 and 2002, the Rotterdam club competed in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the fifth time this season and made further progress for only the second time, emulating their first-place finish of 2014/15 thanks chiefly to a 6-0 win at home to Sturm on Matchday 2 that boosted their goal difference and that Matchday 6 win against Lazio that clinched top spot as all four teams ended with two wins, two draws and two defeats.

This is Feyenoord's first appearance in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals, their one previous knockout phase participation having been brought to a halt in the 2014/15 round of 32 by Roma. At the equivalent stage of last season's UEFA Europa Conference League they knocked out Slavia (3-3 h, 3-1 a) in what was the club's first European quarter-final since they beat fellow Dutch side PSV Eindhoven on penalties after two 1-1 draws in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup. Feyenoord's all-time record in European quarter-finals is W8 L4.

Feyenoord are unbeaten in 13 European matches in Rotterdam (W11 D2). They won eight out of nine home games in all rounds of last season's UEFA Europa Conference League (D1), scoring 27 goals, including three in each knockout phase tie. This season they have found the net 16 times in their four UEFA Europa League games in Rotterdam (W3 D1).

Roma

Mourinho's team qualified for the 2022/23 UEFA Europa League group stage via two routes last season – as the sixth-placed side in Serie A and as a result of their triumph in the UEFA Europa Conference League, the win against Feyenoord coming after knockout phase successes against Vitesse, Bodø/Glimt – a team they had also faced in the group stage – and Leicester City.

The Giallorossi got off to a false start this term in UEFA Europa League Group C, losing their opening game 2-1 at Ludogorets. They also went down by the same score at home to Betis, but seven points from their final three matches, the last of them 3-1 at home to the Bulgarian champions, lifted them into second place to secure their further progress.

UEFA Cup runners-up in 1990/91, Roma are making their second appearance in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals, their one previous tie at this stage, in 2020/21, having also been against Dutch opponents as they prevailed 3-2 on aggregate against Ajax (2-1 a, 1-1 h). Last season they won their UEFA Europa Conference League last-eight tie against Bodø/Glimt (1-2 a, 4-0 h) to make their all-time record in UEFA competition quarter-finals W6 L8, wins in each of the last three ties having been preceded by six successive defeats.

Roma had scored at least once in 24 successive away fixtures in continental competition (W12 D4 L8) before failing to find the net against both Salzburg and Real Sociedad in the last two rounds. They have won just one of their last seven European away games (D3 L3) – 2-1 at HJK Helsinki on Matchday 5 this season.
