Mixed reaction to UEFA Cup draw

BV Borussia Dortmund and Valencia CF were in confident mood after the UEFA Cup fourth-round draw but not all of the last 16 are quite as optimistic.

'A strong team'
Dortmund coach Matthias Sammer was pleased to be meeting Lille OSC but was still wary of the threat from the French club, competing in Europe for the first time. "They will be a very strong team because they come from France, the home of the world and European champions," Sammer said.

'Solid and physical'
LOSC technical co-ordinator Stéphane Pauwels was concerned about the challenge facing his team. "It's going to be difficult," he said. "Dortmund play in the same style as us but are a much stronger team. They are very solid and physical."

'A very good draw'
Valencia president Jaime Orti was happy to take on Swiss side Servette FC. "If we consider our last opponents Celtic [FC] who were strong, but we qualified I would say we do have a very good draw against Servette," he said. If Valencia do go through, they face a possible quarter-final against former coach Héctor Cúper’s new club Internazionale FC.

'A special event'
"The draw was perfect for us," said Servette president Christian Hervé. "Valencia are a team we have never played against before. The game will be a special event."

'An attractive opponent'
Feyenoord coach Bert van Marwijk was less optimistic about his side’s prospects after they were paired with Rangers FC of Scotland. "This is a heavy one," he said. "They were the strongest club in the group, so we could have done a lot better. Rangers are a good side and an attractive opponent."

'Looking forward'
Rangers' commercial director Martine Dean called the draw "exciting". She added: "We are looking forward to the match and if we qualify for the quarter finals we would play against Leeds United."

Gerets pleased
Should Feyenoord overcome Rangers they could face an all-Dutch quarter-final against PSV Eindhoven. PSV have been drawn with Leeds United AFC and their coach Erik Gerets said: "With potential opponents like Dortmund, Valencia and Milan [AC], I think we must be happy. Leeds have a very good side but unlike the other teams, we can be sure of two open and attractive games."

'Do the best we can'
Roda JC, the third Dutch team in the draw, are up against Milan but coach George Leekens insists his players will be looking forward to their trip to the San Siro. "Of course we will hardly have a chance of going through, but this opponent is too good to be true," he said. "We will get out there and do the best we can."

Milan wary

'It will be hard'
FC Slovan Liberec are well aware of the challenge posed by Olympique Lyonnais but were upbeat. "Today's draw was good for Liberec," said administrative seceretary Jiri Pinohenc. "I have to say it will be hard for us to go further to the quarter finals. We have to prepare for the match and we will see in Lyon."

Hoping for French fixture
Their French opponents are already hoping for a quarter-final against Le Championnat rivals LOSC but Marino Faccioli, Lyon's administrative director, said "we have to take them seriously because they eliminated [RCD] Mallorca in the previous round".

'A bit worried'
Parma AC are up against the first Israeli team to reach the last 16 of the UEFA Cup, Hapoel Tel-Aviv. "We are quite happy with the draw," said Parma’s head of division Salvatore Scaglia. "Playing against Hapoel is OK for us. Of course we think that our side should be good enough to proceed."

'Very satisfied'
Greek league leaders AEK Athens FC have to overcome Inter if they are to reach the quarter-finals. "We are very satisfied with the draw," said vice-president Petros Stathis. "Inter Milan are one of the best teams in Europe and I think that our team will learn a lot, regardless of the outcome."

Inter focused
"The draw is the draw," said Inter spokesman Giacinto Faccheti. "It’s pointless to discuss if we would have liked to play against other clubs and now we need to focus on AEK Athens”.
