Deadlock broken
The Croatian side broke the deadlock after 28 minutes, Ivica Huljev breaking clear of two challenges to round goalkeeper John Connolly and score with ease.
Mrman makes it two
Four minutes later, it was 2-0, when Danijel Hrman produced a fine shot from ten metres that flew into the top right-hand corner. The two goals left Dundalk under pressure to react, but their forwards struggled to break down a tough Varteks rearguard.
Penalty third
Varteks' excellence was clear to see, and they added a third ten minutes after half-time – Miljenko Mumlek scoring a penalty after a foul on Veldin Karic.
Five-goal rout
Karic himself claimed Varteks' fourth in the 69th minute, controlling a Mumlek corner before shooting past Connolly, and Hrvoje Sklepic completed the scoreline with a fine 25-metre effort gave the Dundalk goalkeeper no chance.
