Significant lead
The game had been in the balance after Daniel Pancu had cancelled out Dynamo's opener from Diogo Rincón, but second-half goals from Ronaldo Guiaro and Pascal Nouma ensured the Turkish side will have a significant lead for the second leg in Kiev next month.
Malignant Tümer
Besiktas signalled their intentions early with two great chances inside the first three minutes. When Valentin Belkevich was penalised for a foul on the edge of the penalty area, Tümer Metin, who emerged as the game's outsanding performer, struck a free-kick which drew a tremendous parried save from Dynamo goalkeeper Vitaliy Reva. Dynamo, looking shaky in the opening stages, failed to clear their lines and moments later Tümer sent a header narrowly wide from eight metres out.
Reva relieved
Tümer was at the hub of everything for the home side and on 20 minutes went close to breaking the deadlock when he held off two challenges before firing a left-footed shot which might have beaten Reva had a slight deflection not taken the pace off the ball.
Rincón strikes
However, completely against the run of play, Dynamo took the lead. Andriy Husin's well-timed interception won the ball for the visitors on the half-hour mark and his ball forward found Maksim Shatskikh, who was fouled by António Carlos. Belkevich whipped in the free-kick, which was flicked on by Olexandr Melaschenko for Rincón to stretch out a leg and score the opener.
Pancu pounces
Refusing to be downbeat, Besiktas immediately went on the offensive and strong running down the left enabled Pancu to pounce, nudging the ball into space and unleashing a venomous 20-metre strike which flew past Reva to level the scores.
Dynamo dominant
The goal lifted Besiktas, who should have gone further ahead two minutes later when Tamer Tuna sent his free header narrowly wide. But for the next 35 minutes of action the pendulum swung in Dynamo's favour, culminating in their best chance to regain the lead on 69 minutes.
Cernat chance
Substitute Florin Cernat almost scored with his first touch after Besiktas goalkeeper Óscar Córdoba wandered well outside his area and headed the ball straight into the striker's path, but although his first-time shot from 45 metres seemed destined for the unguarded net, a Besiktas defender scampered back to intercept.
Quick reactions
Two minutes later, Besiktas were 2-1 up. The Dynamo defence stood still as a looping free-kick was nodded down at the far post by Nouma and Ronaldo Guiaro reacted first to prod the ball into the empty net.
Nouma makes amends
Nouma, who had squandered several half-chances for the home side, completed the scoring eight minutes from time, latching on to Tümer's pass and successfully chipping Reva with a delightful right-footed effort from 20 metres to send the home supporters wild.
