Celtic win spells new name on cup

Draw in Nyon today
Goals from Alan Thompson and John Hartson secured the Scottish champions a 3-1 aggregate success against the three-times winners from Merseyside. Celtic's name will be joined by those of FC Porto, FC Boavista and S.S. Lazio in the semi-final draw today. The draw will take place at 13.00CET at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

Porto neighbours progress
No Portuguese side has ever won the UEFA Cup but Portugal will have two representatives in the semi-finals for the first time after dramatic wins for both Porto and Boavista set up the possibility of a derby between these city rivals in either the semi-final or final.

Derlei double
Porto, like Celtic, secured a memorable away success as they overturned a 1-0 deficit from last week's home leg by defeating Panathinaikos FC 2-0 after extra time. Derlei scored both goals as Porto became the first side to beat Panathinaikos at the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium in European competition.

Boavista win on penalties
Boavista, meanwhile, overcame Málaga CF 4-1 on penalties after an 83nd-minute goal from Luiz Cláudio cancelled out the Spaniards' 1-0 first-leg lead. No more goals came in extra time, giving Boavista goalkeeper Ricardo the chance to claim hero status by scoring his side's first penalty and then saving one at the other end. It was the fourth time Boavista had overturned a first-leg deficit in this season's competition.

Lazio ease through
Lazio made light work of their visit to Istanbul, defeating Besiktas JK 2-1 to secure a 3-1 aggregate success. The tie was all but over inside ten minutes as Stefano Fiore and Lucas Castromán struck early for the Italian side, who reached the final of this competition in 1998. Sergen Yalçin scored the Turkish side's late consolation.

Draw procedure
According to the format of the draw, the first team drawn out of the hat will play their semi-final first leg at home, against the second team drawn. The same procedure will apply to the remaining two sides in the draw. A second draw will then take place to determine which of the winning semi-finalists will be the 'home team' in the final on 21 May in Seville. The semi-final matches will be played on 10 and 24 April.
