Out of contract
The 24-year-old right midfield player was out of contract at KAA Gent and had been on trial at R. Antwerp FC and FC Twente, but in the end agreed a deal with Belgian Cup winners La Louvière who will play SL Benfica in the first round of the UEFA Cup.
Progress stalled
Van Handenhoven made his debut at Gent during the 1997/1998 season at the end of which he joined French side FC Metz. He suffered a knee ligament injury in the 2001/02 campaign, however, and returned to Gent early last season but did not appear regularly.
