Dortmund ease past Austria

Sleepy start
From the kick-off, both teams had problems getting into this match. The home side, with a 2-1 lead from the first leg, did not take control of the game, but the visitors were just not able to create any attacks of note. The first shot on goal went wide after six minutes from Dortmund’s Ricken. This was the only action in front of either goal in the initial 15 minutes.

Early lead
Dortmund set up the first determined attack after 17 minutes, when the tall Czech striker Jan Koller put Dédé into space on the left wing. The Brazilian's cross to the far post was nodded in by Ricken from close range. The same player had the chance to make it 2-0 after 38 minutes, but the German international could not get on the end of Koller's clever header.

Dundee effort
Austria came out with renewed intent after the break, but struggled to get a sight of goal until the 54th minute. Substitute Sean Dundee had a close-range effort blocked before a second shot was deflected over. Then, from just inside the area, Sigurd Rushfeldt drove his shot narrowly over.

Dortmund determined
The game improved as it went along, and Dédé and Ricken both went close to extending the lead with efforts from the edge of the box. With 67 minutes played, Ewerthon missed from close range after being set up by Koller from the left.

Clean sheet
With 22 minutes to go, Sammer brought on Tomáš Rosický for Ricken - the Czech playmaker making his first appearance since recovering from an appendix operation. In the dying minutes of the game Dortmund concentrated on not conceding a goal and easily kept a clean sheet until the final whistle, thus booking their place in the second round.
