Contenders draw no comfort

Feyenoord
An injury-time goal from Bart Goor earned Feyenoord a 3-3 draw at home to PSV Eindhoven ahead of their final Group A game at FC Basel 1893. Two goals behind at half-time, Salomon Kalou scored four minutes into the second half to end PSV's record 1,159-minute run without conceding, with Shinji Ono also on target. Midfielder Sebastián Pardo is set to miss the trip to Switzerland with a hamstring injury and left-sided defender Ramon van Haaren is also out as he recovers from knee trouble. Winger Leonardo, meanwhile, is unlikely to return to action until after the winter break.

Schalke
Having completed their Group A programme on Matchday 4, Schalke retained second spot in the Bundesliga despite a 1-1 home draw with bottom club SC Freiburg on Saturday. Mladen Krstajic's 24th-minute header gave the Gelsenkirchen side the initiative but they were pegged back by a late goal. Niels Oude-Kamphuis played in place of left-back Christian Pander, who has a muscle problem in his back, while flu confined Sven Vermant to the sidelines.

Basel
There was another 3-3 draw in Switzerland as Basel failed to overcome FC Thun, despite leading 3-1 at half-time. Matías Delgado, César Carignano and Julio Rossi scored the goals for the runaway league leaders but a blunder from goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbühler let Thun back into the game. In their defence, Basel were without suspended top scorer Christian Giménez, defenders Boris Smiljanic and Alexandre Quennoz as well as long-term injury victims Mladen Petric and Murat Yakin. Their defensive crisis deepened after Samuele Preisig was substituted with an injury early in proceedings.

Hearts
Needing a win against Ferencvárosi TC this week to maximise their chances of progress, Heart of Midlothian FC had a disappointing weekend, drawing 1-1 at Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC. Defender Andy Webster was sent off on 33 minutes, forcing a number of tactical changes on coach John Robertson. Substitute Graham Weir gave the Edinburgh team the lead with a 62nd-minute penalty, but that was cancelled out by a penalty at the other end six minutes later.

Ferencváros
With the league season stopping for the winter break, Ferencváros ended their domestic campaign by reaching the Hungarian Cup quarter-finals with a 3-1 win at Pécsi MFC last Wednesday. Midfielder Dénes Rósa scored twice, with striker Marek Penksa adding a late third, to set up a tie against the only Hungarian team to beat Ferencváros this season, Kaposvári Rákóczi FC. Midfielder Adem Kapic will not play against Hearts after receiving his fifth booking of the competition against Basel, but Ferencváros have no other injury worries as they seek an unlikely qualification for the knockout stages.
