Surgery solution
The 29-year-old Brazilian, who joined Benfica from French side OGC Nice in the summer, has suffered the problem in the groin area ever since and the Portuguese side's medical staff decided that pre-Christmas surgery was the best solution so that the player can recover quickly.
Qualification assured
Benfica have already booked their place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup having finished with nine points from their four Group G games. The Lisbon side end 2004 with games against FC Penafiel in the Portuguese SuperLiga on Saturday and second division União Desportiva Oliveirense in the Portuguese Cup four days later.
