Tromsø IL
Tromsø coach Steinar Nilsen's hopes of giving his side a run-out have been disappointed after a scheduled practice match against Rosenborg BK was cancelled. The side from the north of Norway were scheduled to fly to Trondheim but had to call the game off after their plane failed to get off the ground. It means Tromsø have not played since their defeat by RC Strasbourg on 3 November, and they face further unrest as Nilsen prepares to step down. "I feel I need more education as a coach," the coach said. "The step up from player to coach maybe came too soon."
FK Crvena Zvezda 2-1 FK Zemun
Crvena Zvezda returned after the international break with a 2-1 home victory against Zemun in the Serbo-Montenegrin First League. Midfielder Dragan Mladenović and defender Ardian Djokaj got the goals at either end of the second half as Crvena Zvezda reinforced their position at the top of the table, six points clear of second-placed FK Partizan.
Nikola Žigić was rested by coach Walter Zenga due to tiredness. The forward was one of four players on international duty last week, along with Mladenović, Aleksandar Luković and Nenad Kovačević. Meanwhile, five others - Vladimir Stojković, Dušan Basta, Milan Biševac, Boško Janković and Milan Purović - were part of the Serbo-Montenegrin squad that reached the finals of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship. A number of the players returned with niggling injuries – Janković with a nose problem and Mladenović with a muscle strain – while Marko Perović missed the Zemun game with a knee injury.
AS Roma 1-4 Juventus
Roma suffered a heavy home defeat against Juventus on Saturday night, Pavel Nedvěd heading the Serie A leaders in front just before half-time. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and two for David Trezeguet secured the points for Juventus before Francesco Totti scored a consolation goal from the penalty spot. Coach Luciano Spalletti was without Romanian defender Cristian Chivu, through suspension and a thigh injury, while Antonio Cassano was not included due to a contract dispute. Meanwhile, a late injury ruled Brazilian winger Mancini out of the match.
Spalletti said: "They have scored four times with their first four shots on goal, although Juventus remain an excellent team. I think that we are a really good team as well but their goal just before the break was a big blow for us because we had been playing better than them until then. We made a couple of mistakes in the second half but I have nothing to blame my players for".
RC Strasbourg 0-0 OGC Nice
Ligue 1's bottom club are still searching for their first league victory of the season after 15 rounds of matches in the French top flight, although they did at least have the minor satisfaction of their seventh draw. Strasbourg coach Jacky Duguépéroux dropped goalkeeper Stéphane Cassard in favour of Nicolas Puydevbois, while the early injury to centre-back Jean-Christophe Devaux, who had to limp off with a calf problem to be replaced by 19-year-old Yann Schneider, left the home defence with an average age of just 21. Karim Haggui (foot), Cédric Kanté (adductor) and Yves Deroff (thigh) are injured, although all are expected to travel to Italy for the Roma game.
Tunisian international Haikel Gmamdia, who scored both goals in his country's friendly victory against Egypt on 16 November, was also absent having missed his flight back to France. During the international break Strasbourg gave a trial to Fredi Bobic but opted not to sign the former German international, while Duguépéroux's resignation was rejected by president Egon Gindorf. "I saw two games on Saturday," said the Strasbourg coach. "We were nervous and failed to play our game in the first half. In the second we found back our strength and spirit. This clean sheet is a plus point. Our young centre-backs [Yann Schneider and Habib Bellaid] are another, as is the fact that fans still back us. Now we just need a win."
FC Aarau 0-2 FC Basel 1893
Basel withstood a second-half fightback to claim a hard-fought victory at Aarau on Sunday, their sixth successive win in the Swiss Football League. Papa Malick Ba broke the deadlock after 15 minutes, but not until Argentinian striker Julio Rossi doubled the advantage ten minutes before full-time did the points look safe. Aarau had two goals disallowed, and Pascal Zuberbühler was frequently called into action.
The Basel goalkeeper was presented with flowers before the match, along with fellow Swiss internationals Boris Smiljanic and Patrick Müller, after helping the side book a place at the 2006 FIFA World Cup last week, and the latter was pleased to return to domestic action with a win. "It was important to win this match after the international lay-off," he said. "Now we can relax ahead of the next few games." Basel coach Christian Gross may go into those fixtures without the injured Murat Yakin, César Carignano and Alexandre Quennoz, although Scott Chipperfield will be available after serving a suspension against Aarau.
