End of the line for Videoton and Sporting

Sporting Clube de Portugal and Videoton FC have nothing left to play for as they go into their final UEFA Europa League Group G match, which has been rescheduled after heavy rainfall forced the game to be called off on Thursday.

Previous meetings
• Videoton won 3-0 when the sides met for the first time on matchday two, with first-half goals from Paulo Vinícius, Filipe Oliveira and Nemanja Nikolić condemning Sporting to a fourth successive defeat out of four in Hungary – with coach Ricardo Sá Pinto leaving the club soon afterwards. It was Vidi's first game against a Portuguese side.

• Sporting's record in nine games against Hungarian sides is W2 D1 L6. Those games include the final of the 1963/64 European Cup Winners' Cup, where Sporting beat MTK Budapest 1-0 in a replay in Belgium two days after their first encounter ended 3-3.

• Excluding those two games, Sporting's record against Hungarian sides reads W1 D0 L6 (W1 D0 L2 in Portugal – W0 D0 L4 in Hungary).

Match background
• Sporting have competed in all four UEFA Europa League group stage campaigns to date, yet this is the first time the have failed to qualify for the knockout phase.

• Sporting's two previous Group G home games have ended in draws. They remain unbeaten in 15 UEFA home matches (W12 D3) since a 2-0 loss to Brøndby IF in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League play-offs. They have never lost at home in the UEFA Europa League – group stage to final – a run of 18 fixtures without defeat and a record for the competition.

• Sporting had the worst disciplinary record in the group stage going into matchday six, with 14 yellow cards and three red.

• Videoton have not scored in their last two Group G games (both defeats), or indeed in their last three UEFA Europa League away matches (a draw followed by two losses), play-offs included.

• Sporting's Diego Capel has been fouled more than any other player in the group stage – 22 times so far.

• Videoton defender Marco Caneira has played for Sporting in three separate spells. He started his career in the club's youth department, and made his debut for them at 17, representing Sporting 1996–2000 and 2006/07 (when he won the Portuguese Cup while on loan from Valencia CF) and from 2008–11, after which he joined Videoton.

• Vidi midfielder Renato Neto is on loan from Sporting: the Brazilian also came through the club's youth system.

• Paulo Sousa, the Hungarian club's Portuguese coach, has brought in several players with experience of playing in Portugal: forward Filipe Oliveira (CS Marítimo, SC Leixões, SC Braga), defender Stopira (CD Santa Clara, CD Feirense) and Kaká (SC Braga).

• Frank Vercauteren has been Sporting coach since 24 October, when he replaced Ricardo Sá Pinto. A UEFA Cup winner as a player with RSC Anderlecht in 1983, Vercauteren led KRC Genk to the 2010/11 Belgian title. The former Belgium coach, who also won back-to-back Belgian championships with Anderlecht between 2005 and 2007, left his last job with Al Jazira Club of the United Arab Emirates earlier this year.

• Former Portugal midfielder Paulo Sousa won back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles as a player with Juventus (1995/96) and Borussia Dortmund (1996/97), as well as domestic titles in Portugal and Italy. He coached in England with Queens Park Rangers FC, Swansea City AFC and Leicester City FC before joining Videoton in May 2011.

• Paulo Sousa left Lisbon rivals SL Benfica to spend a season at Sporting as a player, in 1993/94, scoring twice in 31 league games before moving on to Juventus.
