Pierre Webó and Dirk Kuyt scored late goals to give Fenerbahçe SK a 2-0 UEFA Europa League quarter-final first-leg win against S.S. Lazio and their delight was clear, the Dutch forward saying they were in "a perfect situation". Next Thursday's return match will be behind closed doors in Rome but Lazio's Lorik Cana vowed to give their fans something to cheer regardless.
Dirk Kuyt, Fenerbahçe forward
It was a very difficult match but that's normal when you play quarter-finals in UEFA competitions. Tonight we were very efficient and are satisfied with the 2-0. To be honest, we're in a perfect situation. That said, it's just half-time in the overall picture. There's still one very difficult game to play. I played for Liverpool and we were 3-0 down after 65 minutes and still won the [UEFA] Champions League, so in football anything is possible. Only if we're really focused can we reach the semi-finals.
I think playing without supporters is a disadvantage for any footballer, because you want to play for the supporters. We played twice without the fans and that's the worst punishment a footballer can get. Hopefully it won't happen again but we'll be playing another silent game next week. The strategy for the second match will be controlling the game and not giving any chances to Lazio to score. If we can at least score a goal, it will be very difficult for them to come back. But I expect they will strive to score as many goals as they can.
Pierre Webó, Fenerbahçe forward
It's a really nice result. We now have the advantage but Lazio are a very good and strong team so it's not finished yet. We must play a good match there and be very serious to reach the next round. They will do more to beat us in the second leg. Our fans tonight were very good and we are very happy.
Our coaching staff warned us that Lazio were a compact and serious team and got us to watch a lot of videos of them. We saw their games against Borussia Mönchengladbach and VfB Stuttgart. In the second half, when Lazio were reduced to ten men, it worked to our advantage and we got the victory. Ultimately, Lazio played the way we expected them to play.
Lorik Cana, Lazio midfielder
It's not a good result for us. We conceded two goals and couldn't score any away goals. It's going to be tough to recover from this defeat but I believe we still have a good chance to go through. We have a strong side and we are capable of doing it. Tonight we played a very serious game and showed our quality. With 11 men it would not have been the same result, but that's football – we just need to keep our heads up and look forward.
The strategy for the second match won't be too different from our usual game. We just need to perform to our best. Miroslav Klose will have fully recovered by that time and [Stefano] Mauri will be better as well as some other players. We need to play like we do every week because we still have the ability to win the game, but for sure it's going to be difficult.
The fans in Turkey are some of the best in the world. I played for Galatasaray and I am a big fan of theirs, but Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş have great fans who support their teams until the end and that's what they did tonight. In the second leg, our fans won't be with us but we need to fight and win for them.
