Jesus eager to set Benfica record straight

After losing their last six European finals, SL Benfica's charismatic coach Jorge Jesus is eager to set the record straight when the Eagles face Chelsea FC in Wednesday's UEFA Europa League showpiece in Amsterdam.

"Winning the Europa League would be a very important moment in the club's history, and for the players and staff. Getting to the final is a great achievement in itself but coming away victorious would be even greater," the 58-year-old told UEFA.com. "Benfica are always under pressure when they play and we know that in every competition we take part in, the aim is to get to the final and win."

Jesus needs no reminder of the Lisbon side's illustrious past, immortalised by consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cup triumphs in 1961 and 1962. "I know that Benfica's great moment in sporting history was in the 1960s. I was born in '54, but I know the history of the club because I have read about it and it is illustrated in photos at the training ground," he said. 

Chelsea represent a challenging obstacle to the dream of rekindling Benfica's love affair with continental crowns, yet nevertheless are a team Jesus will enjoy tackling. "It's our pleasure to face Chelsea, to share a final with opponents that were once my players.

"They have David Luíz and Ramires, but I'm not forgetting about Paulo Ferreira and Hilário. That is an important thing to note, and we're happy to meet them in the final."
