Goalkeeper Yann Sommer wants FC Basel 1893 to continue treating the UEFA Europa League as an added bonus ahead of Thursday's semi-final second leg against Chelsea FC.
Trailing 2-1 from last week's home instalment with the Blues, Basel are in the rarefied surroundings of the last four of a UEFA competition for the first time. They have hardly taken the easy route to scale such heady heights, overcoming the likes of Sporting Clube de Portugal, FC Zenit St Petersburg and Tottenham Hotspur FC en route to their meeting with the UEFA Champions League holders. The last-eight tie against Tottenham was their toughest task of all, Sommer the hero in a dramatic penalty shoot-out triumph.
"Before the match, we said to ourselves that we should enjoy this whole campaign, just enjoy it," said the 24-year-old Swiss international. "It was like a little dessert for us. Next to trying to win the domestic league title again, the Europa League is like a dessert for us, which we just wanted to enjoy all the way through. In my case, I didn't put any pressure on myself; we had nothing to lose. We just wanted to give a good performance. I think Europe now knows that good football is played in Switzerland. I didn't really put any pressure on myself in the penalty shoot-out."
