Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer will join VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach from UEFA Europa League hopefuls FC Basel 1893 in the summer.
The 25-year-old will have a deal running until summer 2019 with the Bundesliga outfit after the agreement of a fee believed to be around €6m. Sommer, who has spent his whole career with Basel save for loan spells at FC Vaduz and Grasshopper Club, has won the last three Swiss Super League titles and is likely to travel to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil as understudy to Diego Benaglio.
"I am looking forward to the new challenge in the Bundesliga, but will continue to give everything for FCB until the end of the season," said Sommer, whose side meet FC Salzburg in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 over the next two Thursdays. "We will do everything to win a fifth league title in a row. It is difficult to leave FCB, but I have always dreamt of playing in a bigger league."
Basel president Bernhard Heusler added: "In Yann Sommer we are losing an outstanding goalkeeper and personality. We recognise the player's wish to accept the challenge that is the Bundesliga. In FCB's interest, we had tough and hard negotiations, but considered the player's wishes as well."
