FC Porto could be without Helton for the rest of season after the goalkeeper underwent surgery on the Achilles injury he suffered in Sunday's 1-0 defeat by Sporting Clube de Portugal.
The 35-year-old captain limped off an hour into the Sporting loss, a result that leaves the Dragons third, five points adrift of their opponents and an automatic UEFA Champions League spot. Portuguese Liga leaders SL Benfica are nine points ahead of them, which could become 12 this evening.
Helton, in his ninth season at the club, had an operation on Monday and is likely to sit out the rest of the campaign as Porto seek an unlikely turnaround. He will also miss the UEFA Europa League denouement, with Luís Castro's men leading 1-0 after the round of 16 first leg against SSC Napoli.
Compatriot Fabiano, a 26-year-old yet to make his league start for the club, is expected to deputise for Helton.
