Frantic final-minute drama saw HJK Helsinki come out on top against FC København to end the visitors' hopes of advancing from Group B and keep the Finnish side's slim dreams alive.
FCK thought they had rescued their UEFA Europa League campaign when Per Nilsson scored in the 90th minute, but Macoumba Kandji hit the clincher three minutes later to give HJK the three points and leave them requiring a win at group leaders Club Brugge KV on matchday six to give themselves a chance.
With both teams desperately needing a victory, it was end-to-end entertainment from the first whistle. HJK captain Teemu Tainio went close with an angled effort in the second minute while at the other end Steve De Ridder wasted a good opportunity. Mika Väyrynen twice had attempts saved by København keeper Stephan Andersen before the frenetic opening calmed slightly.
However, following an Erfan Zeneli corner, Väyrynen shot fiercely from ten metres and Andersen could only block the ball straight into the path of HJK centre-back Gideon Baah, who smashed into the back of the net. The Danes took the initiative from that moment and surged forward at the start of the second period, forcing Antonio Doblas in the HJK goal to repel Pierre Bengtsson's powerful strike.
Nilsson twice elicited fine stops from Doblas with headers, but it looked like the keeper would be beaten in the 84th minute when Andreas Cornelius rounded him, only for a brilliant tackle from Valtteri Moren to frustrate the forward. The pressure finally told when Nilsson fired in from close range in the 90th minute, yet it was not all over as HJK came again. Robin Lod provided a pinpoint pass from the left and Kandji's diving header left Andersen little chance.
