Ilie Dumitrescu has resigned as coach of FC Steaua Bucureşti after only 40 days in charge of the UEFA Europa League contenders.
The 41-year-old former Romanian international succeeded Victor Piţurcă on 11 August, the latter having only taken the reins himself in early June. Dumitrescu, who enjoyed two spells with Steaua as a player, announced his decision after Monday's 1-1 home draw with second-bottom FC Astra Ploiesti in Liga 1, the capital club's fourth successive game without a win in all competitions.
Despite that result, Steaua trail leaders FC Oţelul Galaţi by just a point eight matches into the season. Tuesday's training session was led by Dumitrescu's assistant, Eduard Iordanescu, though no decision has been made regarding a permanent successor. Steaua play SSC Napoli on 30 September having opened their UEFA Europa League Group K campaign with a 4-1 loss to Liverpool FC last week.
