France striker Sylvain Wiltord will finish his trophy-laden career where he started it after opting to leave Olympique Lyonnais for Stade Rennais FC on a two-year deal.
Coaching opportunity
The 33-year-old, who has scored 26 goals in 92 international appearances, was on the cusp of making the move last month only for it to break down over personal terms. With those issues now solved, Wiltord has returned to the Stade de la Route-de-Lorient with an option in his contract for a third season and an opportunity to join the coaching staff when his playing days end.
League honours
"Sylvain is fit and on top of his game. He will be at training on Thursday morning with his new team-mates," said Rennes president Frédéric de Saint-Sernin. "We paid a fee of €1.5m." Wiltord first arrived at Rennes in 1991 and scored 31 goals in 126 league games before departing for FC Girondins de Bordeaux in 1997/98. He was France's 22-goal leading scorer as Les Marine et Blanc won the title in 1999 and added two more championships at Arsenal FC and three in the colours of Lyon. Rennes will enter the UEFA Cup in the first round, while Lyon contest the UEFA Champions League.
