Niculae will be out of action for the next two months following the setback, which came on Sporting's first day of pre-season. The 22-year-old was troubled by injuries to his right foot last term and spent the summer holiday at home in Romania trying to regain full fitness.
Earlier problem
Niculae joined Sporting two years ago but missed much of his first campaign in Lisbon, 2001/02, after undergoing knee surgery in December 2001. His third season at the club will now begin unhappily as he will definitely miss the start of the campaign in mid-August.
