Respect abounds between Club Brugge and Dnipro

The way Club Brugge KV eliminated Beşiktaş JK in the round of 16 has given FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk coach Myron Markevych plenty to ponder after the sides were pitted together in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals. Markevych says the Belgian outfit are a "very strong and quality team", while opposite number Michel Preud'homme stresses that the Ukrainian club "deserve our respect" for accounting for AFC Ajax. 

Facts and figures
• The teams have met once before, the Ukrainian outfit coming from 2-1 down to prevail 3-2 in Dnipropetrovsk in a 2004 UEFA Cup group game. Dnipro ultimately finished top of the section; Club Brugge bowed out.
• Club Brugge have never lost a UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League quarter-final, overcoming AC Milan in 1975/76 and Panathinaikos FC in 1987/88, winning both 3-2 on aggregate.
• Club Brugge are the only unbeaten side left in the competition; by contrast, Dnipro have lost four matches – as many as they have won.
• Dnipro were initially drawn at home but the fixture was reversed according to the draw procedure as the first leg clashed with FC Dynamo Kyiv's home encounter with ACF Fiorentina.

It is ridiculous to say that Brugge is a good draw for us. They are a very strong and quality team who play great attacking football and got past Beşiktaş quite easily. That says a lot. Now we'll start studying them. We'll watch their matches and prepare for the upcoming tie. Dnipro should be prepared in the best possible manner as there are no weak teams at this stage. We are happy to be among the last eight, but we must try to achieve more.

They may not be a famous name and this may not be an attractive-looking trip, but any side that knocks out Ajax deserves our respect. We lose the home advantage, but that is positive for us in the run-up to our league match versus Anderlecht [on 19 April]. We are now entering a busy period, but we can take confidence from our performances in Europe. This could give us wings.
