ACF Fiorentina have pulled off a transfer coup after capturing German international Mario Gomez from FC Bayern München for a fee of €16m that could rise to €20m.

Gomez, who turns 28 on Wednesday, has penned an undisclosed deal with the Italian side and is the latest significant signing for new coach Vincenzo Montella. Experienced midfielder Massimo Ambrosimi, Spanish winger Joaquín from Malaga CF and Ukrainian forward Oleksandr Jakovenko have already arrives in Florence this summer.

Gomez scored 112 goals in 172 competitive appearances after joining Bayern from VfB Stuttgart in 2009, in a deal worth in the region of €30m. He won two Bundesliga titles to add to one he captured at Stuttgart, as well as two German Cups and the UEFA Champions League in May. Yet last season he fell out of favour, struggling for regular starts under Jupp Heynckes.

"My time in one of the best clubs in the world is over and the four years I've spent here were fantastic," he said in a statement. "I want to thank everybody – the board, the players and the fans – for this extraordinary experience. Now there is a new chapter in my footballing career and I can't wait to wear the Fiorentina shirt and start my next adventure."

Fiorentina finished fourth in Serie A last season and will begin their UEFA Europa League campaign in the play-offs.
