Europa League shocks abound on dramatic night

Shocks abounded as the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round concluded, with the likes of FC Irtysh Pavlodar and FK Mladost Podgorica taking the scalps of famous European names.

There was plenty of penalty drama as well across the continent, with FK Turnovo, Prestatyn Town FC and Skonto FC all holding their nerve to prevail from the spot. Elsewhere, there were big wins for Budapest Honvéd FC, Rosenborg BK and FC Dinamo Minsk, who all wrapped up their ties with comfort.

Irtysh advanced from the first round for the second time in their history, surprising PFC Levski Sofia with an early onslaught. The Kazakh side survived a siege in Bulgaria last week, when Vyacheslav Kotlyar saved a penalty from Basile de Carvalho in a 0-0 draw, but they turned the tables in Pavlodar. Kamoliddin Murzoev and Ulugbek Bakaev (a penalty) struck either side of Daniel Dimov's 12th-minute dismissal to secure a 2-0 win.

Meanwhile, Mladost Podgorica ensured their debut tie in European competition was one to remember. The Montenegrin Cup winners beat last season's group stage contenders, Videoton FC, thanks to Ivan Knežević's added-time penalty to seal an away-goals triumph.

Perhaps the performance of the day came from another team making their bow in continental football as Prestatyn overturned a 2-1 first-leg home loss to win their tie with SK Liepājas Metalurgs on penalties in Latvia. Neil Gibson crucially scored in the 91st minute to take it to extra time, and the midfielder scored one of the Welsh club's four spot kicks; Jurģis Kalns and Jānis Ikaunieks missed for the hosts.

Turnovo booked a high-profile tie with HNK Hajduk Split, keeping their cool in the shoot-out following a second 2-2 draw in a week with FK Sūduva. Skonto also prevailed from the spot despite a 1-0 home loss to FC Tiraspol. It was somewhat less tense for Honvéd as Emanuele Testardi's hat-trick contributed to the most emphatic result of the night, a 9-0 success against FK Čelik Nikšić making it 13-1 on aggregate.

Three more clubs making their inaugural European appearances also made it through, in the shape of FC Astra, FC Chikhura Sachkhere and FK Kukësi, while ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar progressed through a UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League tie for just the second time in ten attempts. Arnar Bergsson's 90th-minute penalty at HB Tórshavn secured a 2-1 victory and a plum tie with 1990/91 European Champions Clubs Cup winners FK Crvena zvezda.
