Lyon v CSKA Moskva background

Home comforts greet 2018 final host club Lyon in the second leg of their round of 16 tie against CSKA Moskva following a 1-0 away win in the Russian capital – the French club's third victory out of three in this season's knockout phase.

• Lyon were one of only three clubs to emerge victorious from the round of 32 having played the second leg away, adding a 1-0 win in Spain against Villarreal to a 3-1 first-leg success at the Parc OL. They were runners-up to Atalanta in the group phase.

• Third in their UEFA Champions League group during the autumn, CSKA overcame Crvena zvezda in the round of 32, a goalless draw in Belgrade preceding a 1-0 win in Moscow, with Alan Dzagoev scoring the all-important goal on the stroke of half-time.

Previous meetings
• Lyon's second successive 1-0 away win in the competition was secured when Brazilian defender Marcelo headed in Memphis Depay's corner midway through the second half of the first leg in Moscow. It was the teams' first meeting in UEFA competition.

• Lyon won the first two of their three home games against Russian opposition but lost the most recent – 0-2 against Zenit in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League group stage, having been beaten 3-1 by the same opponents in St Petersburg a fortnight earlier.

• CSKA's record against French clubs in Europe is W4 D3 L6, with two wins, one draw and three defeats in France.

• The Army Men's heaviest European defeat was against Ligue 1 opponents, Marseille overwhelming them 6-0 in the inaugural UEFA Champions League group stage in 1992/93, the club's first visit to France. However, CSKA's biggest win in that competition came in the French capital when they completed the double over Paris Saint-Germain by defeating them 3-1 at the Parc des Princes in the 2004/05 group stage.

• Lyon are unbeaten at home in nine European fixtures (W7 D2). That run includes five straight victories in the UEFA Europa League knockout phase, during which they have scored 19 goals. They have won six of their last seven European matches this season, including each of the last three at home.

• Lyon have kept only one clean sheet, however, in nine UEFA Europa League home knockout fixtures – and none in their last seven.

• The French side's only European defeat in 11 matches in their new stadium (W8 D2) came against Juventus (0-1) on matchday three of the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League.

• This is Lyon's third appearance in the UEFA Europa League round of 16. Their previous two ties at this stage both ended in victory, thanks to emphatic home wins – 4-1 against Viktoria Plzeň in 2013/14 (5-3 on aggregate) and 4-2 against Roma last season (5-4 on aggregate).

• Lyon were UEFA Europa League semi-finalists last season, when they lost to Ajax having transferred from the UEFA Champions League group stage. They ensured a return to this season's UEFA Europa League group stage by finishing fourth in Ligue 1.

• CSKA have won four of their six European away fixtures this season, including 2-1 victories at Benfica and Basel in the UEFA Champions League group stage. They have conceded just four goals in those six matches.

• The Moscow side's last European knockout phase involvement was a UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie with Real Madrid in 2011/12, which they lost 5-2 on aggregate (1-1 home, 1-4 away). Their only previous appearance in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 dates back to 2010/11, when they were defeated by eventual winners Porto (0-1 home, 1-2 away).

• CSKA have won five of their last eight UEFA Europa League away games, including qualifying, losing only one – that 2010/11 round of 16 encounter in Porto.

• CSKA were runners-up to city rivals Spartak Moskva in last season's Russian Premier League. To reach the UEFA Champions League group stage they came through two qualifying rounds, defeating both AEK Athens and Young Boys 3-0 on aggregate.

• Lyon have won 12 ties out of 13 in UEFA competition after winning the first leg away from home, their only loss inflicted by eventual winners Internazionale Milano in the second round of the 1997/98 UEFA Cup (2-1 away, 1-3 home).

• The French club have a 100% success rate in the five ties in which they won the first leg 1-0 away, most recently against PSV Eindhoven in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League round of 16 (4-0 home). They have won four of those five second legs, drawing the other.

• CSKA have lost all four European ties when they have been defeated in the first fixture at home, most recently in the aforementioned 2010/11 UEFA Europa League round of 16 against Porto, one of two such ties in which the first-leg score was 0-1.

• Lyon are the only team in this season's round of 16 who were also present at the same stage 12 months ago. They are also the only French club ever to have reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League, having done so twice.

• CSKA goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev has played every minute of his team's European campaign this season, keeping seven clean sheets in 13 matches.

• Akinfeev's counterpart, Anthony Lopes, has likewise been on the field for every minute of Lyon's nine-match UEFA Europa League journey, conceding just five goals and never more than one in a game.

• Lyon's Depay played twice against CSKA for Manchester United in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League group stage: a 1-1 away draw in Khimki, and a 1-0 home win in Manchester.

• This season's UEFA Europa League final, on 16 May 2018, will be staged in Lyon's home stadium.

The coaches
• Born in Lyon, Bruno Génésio came through the club's ranks as a midfielder, playing for the senior side from 1985 to 1995 before seeing out his career for one season at Martigues. He returned to the club's coaching staff in 2007 and served as assistant boss for four years before taking sole command in December 2015 when he replaced Hubert Fournier.

• Appointed by CSKA to replace long-serving coach Leonid Slutski in December 2016, Viktor Goncharenko was only 39 at the time, but he had earned a growing reputation in Russian football, notably while serving as Slutski's assistant. He made his name as a coach in his native Belarus at BATE Borisov, winning five straight titles and leading the club into the UEFA Champions League group stage on three occasions.
