Goalkeeper: Yann Sommer (Mönchengladbach)
The Swiss international pulled off a number of fine saves to repel Schalke and earn Gladbach a draw to take into their home second leg.

Defender: Mallo (Celta)
Celta's captain impressed most going forward with a number of fine deliveries, the last of which resulted in Claudio Beauvue's excellent late winner.

Defender: Uroš Spajić (Anderlecht)
A keystone of the only clean sheet of the night – what more needs to be said?

Defender: Ludwig Augustinsson (København)
Augustinsson was in fine form for FCK, helping the Danes keep a talented Ajax side at bay for much of the 90 minutes.

Midfielder: Alejandro Pozuelo (Genk)
The lively Spaniard repeatedly stabbed holes through the Gent rearguard for team-mates to profit.

Midfielder: Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Manchester United)
Rostov's Armenian community welcomed Mkhitaryan, but the team could not wait to see the back of him after he scored.

Midfielder: Corentin Tolisso (Lyon)
Lyon fans know Tolisso's immense link-up play is at the heart of much of their success, and he was the pass master against Roma.

Midfielder: Ruslan Malinovskiy (Genk)
The Ukrainian claimed perhaps the goal of the night – a glorious free-kick – and worked tirelessly, his corner leading to his side's second.

Forward: Alexandre Lacazette (Lyon)
Lacazette struck with a thunderbolt in his team's 4-2 win and got an assist as well. The best forward outside the UEFA Champions League? Discuss.

Forward: Vincent Aboubakar (Beşiktaş)
A fifth goal in eight European games to turn the tide at Olympiacos; it ended 1-1, but not for want of trying from the Cameroonian.

Forward: Mbwana Samatta (Genk)
The Tanzanian's striker's instincts earned him two goals at Gent – a powerful chest down and drive and an opportunistic toe poke.
