Krasnodar sealed their place in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 with a backs-to-the-wall victory against Borussia Dortmund which also saw them replace the visitors at the top of Group C.

Having a 100% record from their previous trips to Russia, BVB were hoping to wrap up the section but were set back by Pavel Mamaev's second-minute penalty. Thomas Tuchel's team proceeded to lay siege to the home goal for the remaining 88 minutes – hitting the woodwork three times – but Krasnodar hung on to claim pole position on head-to-head record.

Having lost all three previous outings against German opposition, the hosts were hardly expected to seize the initiative yet it was handed to them when Mats Hummels pulled down Mauricio Pereyra in the area in the opening moments. Mamaev stepped up to take the spot kick and slotted straight down the middle. From then on it was all Dortmund, with Adrián Ramos leading the way.

The Colombian's lob over goalkeeper Andriy Dykan looked destined for the net but bounced two metres from goal and sprang up to strike the crossbar. The forward then slashed wide from the edge of the box before seeing a tumbling header excellently saved at the near post.

Gonzalo Castro volleyed off target while Sven Bender headed an outstanding opportunity wide when completely unmarked at a corner. There was little respite for Krasnodar after the restart as their area was peppered with crosses. Łukasz Piszczek sent another header off target before Julian Weigl's attempt looped onto the bar again. A desperate last-gasp block prevented İlkay Gündoğan turning in a pull-back before Henrikh Mkhitaryan's low shot struck a post. Somehow Krasnodar – who had lost 2-1 in Dortmund – clung on.
