Jürgen Klopp claimed a point in his first outing as Liverpool manager and Villarreal slipped off the Liga summit as the UEFA Europa League sides geared up for matchday three with domestic assignments.
Klopp's first game in charge of the Reds ended in a goalless draw at fellow group stage hopefuls Tottenham Hotspur, while his former club Dortmund stayed second in Germany by triumphing 2-0 at Mainz. Third spot in the Bundesliga belongs to Schalke, who grabbed a last-gasp 2-1 win at Hertha Berlin courtesy of Max Meyer.
There was change in the upper reaches of the Liga as previous pacesetters Villarreal lost 2-1 at home to new joint leaders Celta Vigo in their second consecutive loss. As for Fiorentina, they preserved top spot in Italy despite going down by the same scoreline at another UEFA Europa League outfit, Napoli.
