Anderlecht 1-1 Monaco: analysis

After AS Monaco's 1-1 draw at Anderlecht, David Crossan ponders matters including Anthony Martial's successor, the home side's game-plan and Leonardo Jardim's substitutes.

Who will replace Anthony Martial as Monaco centre-forward?
Lacina Traoré did his case no harm at all with the equalising goal in the 1-1 Group J draw in Brussels, but the Ivory Coast striker is currently banned domestically after a red card in a reserve fixture. Midfielder Bernardo Silva said: "I don't know, we have a lot of good players for that position. We have Guido Carrillo, we have Lacina who scored today and we have Ivan Cavaleiro who can also play that role."

Preparation matters
Anderlecht adapted their game plan to the European challenge and got so close to registering a matchday one victory. Ivan Obradović, the Serbian international defender making his first European appearance for the club, said: "Our scouting team did a good job and we knew all about them. We played a bit differently to the way we do in the league, where we attack more. Today was about patience and waiting for our chances. For our confidence, it was a good game for us. We showed today we play as a team."

Substitutes change games
It was one of Leonardo Jardim's predecessors on the Monaco bench, Claudio Ranieri, who earned the nickname 'Tinkerman' while at Chelsea. Jardim does not yet have such a soubriquet but his tactical tweaks and substitutions worked in the second half. Traoré's huge presence meant there was an out ball and Stephan El Shaarawy's desire to get into the box was crucial for the striker's equaliser.

Games last 90 minutes
Anderlecht know to their cost that in Europe you have to keep playing until the final whistle. In last season's UEFA Champions League they led 1-0 at home to Arsenal entering the last minute, only to lose 2-1. In their opening match they had conceded a late equaliser at Galatasaray. Attacking midfielder Dennis Praet said: "We deserved to win against Monaco but the scenario was just like what happened to us in the Champions League last year."
