How the UEFA Europa League hopefuls got on

Marseille and Lazio claimed wins after Liverpool and Celtic suffered costly defeats, while Dortmund warmed up for matchday one with yet another Bundesliga victory.

The 48 UEFA Europa League hopefuls will begin their group stage campaigns this Thursday fresh from a fixture-filled weekend of action, with the likes of Liverpool and Celtic having been involved in heavyweight encounters.

For the Reds, that meant a much-anticipated meeting with Manchester United, but Brendan Rodgers' side slipped to a 3-1 loss at Old Trafford, while Celtic dropped from the Scottish Premier League summit after a 2-1 defeat at new leaders Aberdeen. Dortmund fared much better, in contrast, winning a fourth consecutive Bundesliga game to keep pace with Bayern München, while there were useful victories elsewhere for Lazio, Marseille and Villarreal.
